We our so proud of our Principal Solicitor/CEO, Julie Howes, who received the Pride in Law Award at the Queensland Law Society Excellence Awards on Saturday night. The Pride In Law Award recognises outstanding contributions to advancing LGBTQIA+ inclusion and diversity within the legal profession in Queensland. Julie was one of the founders of the LGBTI Legal Service in 2009, when we were an entirely volunteer-run service, and the first dedicated LGBTQIA+ legal service in Australia. Since returning to the Service in late 2024, Julie has led us through an exciting period of growth, doubling the amount of LGBTQIA+ Queenslanders we assist every year, with a focus on expanding our Services in regional Queensland, particularly in Central Queensland where Julie is based. This growth has been made possible by the additional funding provided by the Queensland Attorney-General’s Department, so it was great to connect with Hon @debfrecklingtonmp to thank her for her support. Thank you to @prideinlaw and @qls for this incredible recognition of Julie’s work!

🏳️‍🌈 Central Queensland Community of Practice 🏳️‍⚧️ Last week, our team in Central Queensland (Julie, Kylie and Felicity) joined other local LGBTQIA+ services and community members to establish Central Queensland's first LGBTIQA+ Community of Practice under the careful guidance of support of the @qld.lgbtqia.alliance Dedicated services for LGBTQIA+ people in regional Queensland are so important for community health and wellbeing. It was great to connect with community members and other organisations who are equally as passionate about building capacity to deliver holistic and tailored services to LGBTQIA+ people in the region.

LGBTI Legal Service has launched a representative complaint against the QLD government and the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services following a ministerial direction preventing the prescription of puberty blockers and hormone treatment for transgender youth. The complaint is seeking to overturn the ban and for compensation for those harmed. It argues that the ban breaches human rights and discriminated against transgender young people based on their gender identity, sex, age and impairment.
