LGBTIQA+ Inclusive Language Guide 2023

April 18, 2023

We are proud to announce the release of our 2023 Language Guide. We designed this guide to help individuals and organisations create a more inclusive environment for the LGBTIQA+ community. The guide provides guidance on language that is respectful, affirming and accurate. Adopting inclusive language and best practice terminology ensures that everyone feels safe and affirmed. The LGBTI Legal Service is committed to making the Services we provide and the Queensland community a safe space for all LGBTIQA+ people.

This guide is a non-exhaustive guide to LGBTIQA+ terminology. Please note that new terminology arises often, and as this occurs, some terms may become irrelevant or lose their status as ‘best practice’. The terms in this guide may also have different connotations for different people. How these affect a person depends on their regional, cultural, and linguistic background. The language adopted in the guide aims to reflect current best practice terminology adopted by the LGBTIQA+ community. Despite this, each individual may have their own language preference. It is important to listen, respect the individual’s perspective and adopt the language that affirms them.
