Press release – Drag Queen Storytime Event at Brisbane Square LibraryAdministrator
4.00pm, Sunday 12 January 2020
Today Rainbow Families Qld and Brisbane City Council Libraries held a drag queen storytime event at the Brisbane Square Library. The event was a beautiful celebration of diverse families run by two Blue Card registered and fully trained drag queens, and the children enjoyed singing and dancing, reading, and doing craft.
Sadly a group of people disrupted the event towards the end, chanting homophobic chants and causing distress to the children and parents attending. Rainbow Families Qld deeply regrets that the actions of a handful of people caused our children to feel unsafe.
We ask anyone with footage of the event or anyone willing to make a witness statement to please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. Drag queen storytime is a highly successful event that has been held four times in Brisbane over the past two years, inspired by similar events currently being held in public libraries across the world.
Coordinator Holly Zwalf expressed her disappointment at the disturbance and reaffirmed, “Love makes a family. There’s no room for hate in our hearts.”
Any families affected by the incident are able to access QUAC’s free counselling service (07) 3017 1777 or urged to call the Diverse Voices/QLife helpline: 1800 184 527.
